How To Download The Latest Version

What is it?

Many programs, such as iTunes, Adobe Flash Player, or Skype for example, are constantly being updated and upgraded by developers. The “latest version”, also known as software updates (or “patches”), are usually released on a scheduled basis, whether its weekly, monthly, or annually. In fact, almost every piece of software on your computer has been upgraded at some point, to fix any possible bugs, to enhance security, or to provide better features. These upgrades are designed to improve the program, and are usually free, which is a huge plus. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade all programs, but especially the ones you use frequently.

How to

The most common type of software update comes directly from your operating system. On Macs, for example, “Software Update” comes pre-installed and will prompt you every few weeks to update a certain program, such as iTunes. You can also install this on Windows-based machines with Apple products. While each program is somewhat different, we’ll look at iTunes to provide a step-by-step guide. If you aren’t prompted for an upgrade, but you know there is one available (or want to check for one), start by launching iTunes and selecting on the “Help” tab. Then select “Check for Updates”, which should prompt an update window to open. If you have other Apple software installed on your computer, you may see updates available for those programs as well. Select the programs you wish to update and click on the “Install” button, which should prompt the updates to install in the background, allowing you to do other things on your laptop. Other programs may be slightly different in terms of the exact step-by-step process, but it should be similar enough.

Why do it?

The biggest reason to update the latest version of software on your computer is to ensure you are always getting the best performance from your device. Almost all upgrades are free, and many software programs make it very easy to upgrade as long as you are able to follow a few simple steps. Take a look at what programs you use every day (or multiple times a week), and check to see if there are any updates available. They may add new, useful features, improve the security of the program, or release a patch to fix any potential bugs. Upgrading your software also shows the developers that you are interested their software and gives them a reason to further develop and enhance the program.

Risks

If you are upgrading software, make sure you are doing so from the developer’s home website or from the actual program itself. Scam artists and cyber hackers use any trick they can to try to get your personal information or log in to your computer, and this includes offering fake software upgrades.

Be careful if you find a software update on a third-party website. Be sure to check that program’s website first to make sure the update is legit. Third-party websites may also have viruses or malware embedded in the update, which can also cause a security risk to your computer.
